RESEARCH ESSENCE (ISSN   2348 – 2389)
Sree Narayana College, Varkala is publishing a Biannual Interdisciplinary Research Journal named “RESEARCH ESSENCE”. The first volume of the Journal (July-December 2013) was published in December and was formally released by our Manager, Sri.VellappallyNatesan on 30th December. The journal publishes original research articles of teachers, researchers, academicians and students from faculty of Science, Literature and Humanities. The Journal was assigned International Standard Serial Number(ISSN 2348-2389) in 3rd February, 2014 for the first volume. The journal has an advisory board and expert reviewers to improve the quality of the published articles.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS (NCC)
The NCC of the College is attached to 1st Kerala Battalion NCC Varkala. The NCC of this college belongs to the Army wing.
The NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens. Further, it aims at creating a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who will serve the Nation regardless of which career they choose. Needless to say, the NCC also provides an environment conducive to motivate young Indians to join the armed forces.

CORE VALUES

The NCC is a responsive, learning and continuously evolving organization. Its activity is guided by certain core values that we endeavour to instill among all ranks of the NCC. These include the following:
(a) A sense of patriotic commitment to encourage cadets to contribute to national development
(b) Respect for diversities in religion, language, culture, ethnicity, life style and habitat to instill a sense of national unity and social cohesion.
(c) Abiding commitment to learn and adhere to the norms and values enshrined in the Indian Constitution
(d) Understanding the value of a just and impartial exercise of authority.

Academic Incentives : NCC cadets who secure more than 75% of attendance are eligible for weightage marks for their admission to various courses and adding Grade Point in the University Examination.

WALK WITH A SCHOLAR (WWS) SCHEME

Walk With a Scholar (WWS), scheme initiated by theDepartment of Higher Education, Govt. of Kerala proposes to arrange specialized mentoring programs for students in Under Graduate Programs in Arts, Science and Commerceand to provide guidance for their future. The Scheme aims at giving necessary orientation to needy students, to prepare themfor employment and give them necessary guidance, motivation and necessarymental support to identify appropriate areas for higher study as well as employment. The program has five internal mentors to guide the students. Besides this, external sessions from outside resource persons are also arranged. The Scheme was implemented in our college from 2014-15.

SCHOLAR SUPPORT PROGRAMME (SSP)

The Scholar Support Programme (SSP) initiated by the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Kerala aims at imparting additional support to students in curricular areas of weakness. Subjects in which additional curricular support would be offered have been selected based on a results analysis work carried out based on results from the affiliated Colleges of Kerala. Five subjects were identified to provide additional support to the students. The Scheme was implemented in our college from 2014-15.

The Grievance Redressal cell looks into the grievances of the staff and students and takes appropriate measures to redress them. The cell consists of three members; one among them shall act as its co-ordinator.

A councelling centre functions in our college to promote the mental health of the students at large. Group counseling and individual counseling are given to the needy students. The sevice of a clinical psychologist is obtained for the purpose.

WOMENS STUDY UNIT
The unit functions effectively with the objective of women empowerment. This is a forum for girl students and teachers to raise women consciousness about the social, cultural, economic and legal injustices, gender issues and discrimination against them and to develop their consciousness, self confidence and esteem through training, discussions, workshops, publications, awareness raising and leadership development programmes. The club activities are properly guided by lady teachers from different departments

Women study unit – report 2014-2015
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT FOR BETTER LIFE, FAMILY AND SOCIETY’
On 9th October, 2014, a meeting of members of women study unit was conducted at 1.30 pm in seminar hall for enrolling the students. The co ordinator Devipriya D, Department of Botany and Lekshmi s Department of Commerce were introduce the objectives of the unit and handed over booklet.They also introduce the faculty members of the women study unit.

Women study unit organized a One day Seminar on ‘Women – How to Empowered ?‟ by Dr Vidhya Ramaswamy on 14.10.2014. All the members and faculty from various Department attended the function. The programme oriented to phase the challenges from different fields. How to continue in Education through out life ? How education change the personality ? All are the discussed topic on the seminar. The students actively engaged in discussion and interaction with Dr vidhya Ramaswamy. A One day UGC Sponsered student oriented ‘Seminar for Presentation Skill development’ organized by Women Study Unit on 06.11.2014. This helps the student to aware about the present rules protecting for them, about the various health
problems they are facing, about various women writers, current challenges to women in our society.
A skill developing activity oriented programme on stitching, stud and bangle making, embroidery and glass painting on the after noon of 19.11.2014 at seminar hall. This programme is an economy benefitted skill developing one.
The women study unit of our college is organizing a session on „How the attitude to be a positive‟? on 16.01.2015 from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm at conference hall. The session will be handed by Devipriya D, convenor, Woman study unit . This programme helps the student to become an open minded one.
The women study unit of our college is organizing a debate on “Women is the centre of Family or not” 11.02.2015 from 1.30pm -3pm at Department of Botany . This programme helps to develop the confidence among their role in family.
One day UGC sponsored ‘skill orientation for self protection’ by Sri Prathap Kumar, Fire and Rescue Services in Disaster Management organized by Women Study Unit on 19.02.2015. Through this programme students develops the skill for sudden action taken to escape from the hazardous effect of Fire, lightening,tanker lorry explosion, LPG leakage Etc. This type of Programme is intended not only for protecting themselves but also to the society in future also.
One day UGC sponsored ‘skill development programme in hand works’ organized by Women Study Unit on 20.02.2015. This enable them to make fresh flower arrangement and necklace making, terracotta ear stud making. This programme is intended to develop the skill and also to utilize the free time worthy.
“Health is our wealth” keeping this in mind we decided to highlight this through our seminar topic for International Womens Day . We conduct a One Day UGC Sponsered seminar on ‘Management of stress and Life Style Diseases through Food’ by Dr Raheena Beegum on 11.03.2015. This motivate the student for being selective in food items, understand that life style disease are associated with our food.

The main objective of debating club is to provide an exposure to students to express themselves in areas pertaining to current trends and affairs in the society. The club focuses on the overall development of students personality and the advancement of their soft skills.

HUMAN RIGHTS FORUM

Human rights forum aims at creating awareness of human rights issue in order to uphold dignity of humanity. The members of the club get a sense of respect towards others by considering the existence of human rights violation all around the world. The activities of the club aim to foster mutual understanding, tolerance and peace among the students with the hope that they will not be among those who will violate the rights of others in the future.

Performing Arts Club and Folklore Report (2014-2015)
Inauguration (Aug 21, 2014) Performing Arts Club and Folklore 2014- 15 was inaugurated on 21st August 2014 by a popular Cine Television Artist Maya Viswanath by lighting the lamp. After the inaugural ceremony she proposed the need to develop ones latent skills regarding the performance. Her speech was so touching and the club members could learn that the talented performers will always find a place of their own by breaking the obstacles in their way. She added that constant struggle was the driving spirit behind her success. The function was presided over the principal Dr.G.Jayasenan, the coordinator Miss Shibi KPS delivered the welcome speech, Dr. Mathew K Jacob, Head of the Department of Geology, and Dr. Anilkumar, Associate Professor of Botany delivered felicitations and the student coordinator Reshnu of second DC Mathematics proposed the vote of thanks.
Quiz Competition (Oct 15)
Performing Arts Club and Folklore conducted a Quiz Competiton on various art forms of Kerala on 15th October 2014 at the Room number 72 of the Department of English. The club members actively involved in the programme and was enthusiastically moved by the joint coordinator Mr.Jyothish, Assistant Professor of Physics. Vismaya of second DC Chemistry, Sooraj of Second DC Chemisrty, and Nidhiya of Second DC Geology won the First, Second and Third position respectively.
Performance of Kathakali (Nov 1, 2014)
On 1st November 2014, Performing Arts Club in association with the Department of Malayalam conducted a Kathakali Performance on the college auditorium. That was an amazing experience to the students. They enjoyed the programme and also got the story well. The programme was inaugurated by the Principal Dr.G Jayasenan, Smt. Beena Karunakaran, Hod of Malayalam delivered the welcome
speech, Dr Sushama TK ,Hod of Hindi delivered felicitations, and Mr.Sanal Kumar, Associate Professor of Malayalam proposed the vote of thanks.
A Special Lecture by Sri Manamboor Radha Krishnan (Jan 30, 2015) On 30th Jan 2015, Performing Arts Club conducted a Special Lecture on the artistic way of storytelling by Manamboor Radhakrishnan. He shared his experience as a story teller and taught the students some tips for becoming an excellent story teller. Students enjoyed his versatility in the artistic way of storytelling and expressed their ambition to become good story tellers. The programme was presided over the Principal Dr.G.Jayasenan, the coordinator and the Assistant Professor of English, Miss Shibi KPS delivered the welcome speech, Dr. Mathew K.Jacob Hod of Geology and Smt.Beena Karunakaran Hod of Malayalam delivered felicitation, and Mr. Jyothish, Assistant Professor and the jont coordinator proposed the vote of thanks.
Photography Contest (Feb 18, 2015) On 18th Feb 2015 Performing Arts Club and Folklore conducted a Photography contest on Nature as a Performer. Students enthusiastically welcomed the idea and produced the photos taken by them. It was really very difficult to find the Best Photographer of the academic year 2014-15. Regarding powerful imagination and
creatve thinking with light and shade the club coordinators selected Arunsha of second DC Mathematics as the Best Photographer.
An Evening for Performance to Unite with Nature (March 26, 2015)
On 26th march 2015 Performing Arts Club in association with Nature Club conducted a Cultural Programme titled An Evenig for Perfprmance to Unite with Nature on the open stage in front of the Department of English. We started the programme with our traditional percussion orchestra. The programme was inaugurated by the Principal Dr.G.Jayasenan by lighting the lamp. The first item was an innovative dance performed by 17 students. The theme of the dance was
India- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. This dance was choreographed by Sooraj of Second DC Chemistry and it was followed by other cultural activities like songs and solo performances.

 
 

MEDIA CLUB

As we live in a competitive world, students need to be efficient mass communicators. The main objective of the media club is to enable students to do so. They will interact among themselves over current media topics of interest. They will also get familiar with different kinds of tools used by Print, T.V. and new media.

NATURE CLUB / ECO CLUB
The club emphasizes the importance of conserving the nature in all its freshness, and to equip the new generation of students to join hands to fight against the reckless and selfish exploitation of natural resources and to fight against environmental pollution. The club functions to inculcate into the students love for nature, responsibility to protect nature and to encourage a symbiotic relationship with other forms of life. The club organises classes, and outdoor study programmes.

The aims of the club are
1. To bring out the latent aesthetic talents in young men and women of the College.

3. To create a tranquil atmosphere in the campus conducive to academic and artistic growth.
4. To embroider and punctuate every function in the college with a prayer and a song.

PLANNING FORUM

The forum is intended for students of the college to involve in activities like open discussions on current ,social and economic issues, talks by eminent resource persons, budget analysis, debates and seminars, Community surveys, Quiz competitions and helps the student in understanding the issues of society and economy. Planning Forum is coordinated by the Dept. of Economics.

Planning Forum Report 2014-15
The Planning Forum 2014-15 was formally inaugurated on 19th February by Dr. Anitha V, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, University of Kerala. The meeting was presided over by the College Principl Dr. G Jayasenan, HOD of Department Dr. A Jayasree who is the mentor and convenor of the forum and all the other faculty members of the Department and also by the members of the Planning Forum. In the meeting it was decided that all the members should give the filled up registration form.
The first major programme was a talk on ‘Financial Planning for Young Investors‘ by Dr. Anitha V on the same day afternoon at the Conference Hall, S N College, Sivagiri. The meeting began by a welcome address by Mr. Syam Raj R, co-ordinator of Planning Forum. During the two hour long talk Dr. Anitha spoke on various issues that are to be kept in mind while investing in share market. She began with basic knowledge about share markets, the major jargons used in capital markets and then moved on to advanced topics in a simplified manner so that not only members of the forum but also other faculty members could get the benefit from it. After the formal talk members of planning forum, PG students and also faculties raised related questions and was clarified by Dr. Anitha V. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Associate professor smt. B Jayasree.
The second major programme was a discussion on ‘Kerala Budget’ which was held on 6th March. The meeting began with a welcome address by the associate professor and HOD of Department of Mathematics, S N College, Sivagiri. She was of the view that budgets are not so popular now a day. Four members of the planning forum presented the Kerala budget’s different aspects. Based on the presentation members were grouped into two and active budget discussion was held which was supervised by Smt. Namitha K Bhatt, co-ordinator of Planning Forum. The meeting was summed up by Mr. Syam Raj R.
The third major programme was students’ seminar by some of the members of Planning Forum. Three members presented on the topic ‘Current economic issues’. The meeting began with a few words by Smt. Namitha K Bhatt about the relevance of the topic followed by the presentation of three members. The topics were ‘ The problem of educated unemployment’ , ‘Organic farming’, and also ‘Downward price rigidity’. The presentation was followed by active discussions from the part of members.
Another programme planning is  a quiz competition among the members of Planning Forum. The idea will improve the knowledge base of the students in different areas. It will have an elimination round and a final round.
Planning Forum will conduct a survey on any local issue. It will impart some real knowledge based on empirical study.

 
 

LITERARY CLUB

An arena for intelligent imaginative and innovative students who prefer to tread an aesthetic track. This club, guided, monitored, and supported by the teachers, gives ample avenues for budding artists, and young creative writers. The club encourages students in literary creations and in performing arts.

BLOOD DONORS’ CLUB

Students enrolled in this club are given opportunity to determine their blood group, and to donate blood, if they are willing, at critical junctures, to save precious lives. The club has been doing commendable service to the society.

ENERGY CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
The world is apparently heading towards an energy and environmental crisis. The need of the hour is to educate the society on the necessity for conserving the resources and protecting the environment. Towards this direction, the club plays an active role. Workshops, seminars and study classes are arranged with this objective. The club members can participate in competitions arranged by the clubs of other colleges and at the university and state level.
